His wife, who lived in the normal part of the house, never knew. He claimed their daughter ran away from home and periodically showed up to abandon children on their doorstep which the “family” would then adopt as their own.
They apparently caught him due to a hidden SOS note the kidnapped woman slipped into the clothes of one of their daughters when she was being taken to the hospital for injuries.
